PROJECT OVERVIEW

We’re breaking new ground…

The project represents new ground in locating advocacy for a just transition within the social movements.  The goal is to strengthen and enable social movements in South Africa to engage all tiers of government towards realising renewable energy community solutions that can become implemented at scale. Increasingly informed and organised social movement engagement will bolster the demand for local government to develop and implement policies, instruments and delivery modalities that incentivise/enable renewable energy delivery to communities they represent. The project seeks to nurture and support champions within partner movements to engage effectively with local governments, and other actors, towards a just transition which promotes/enables renewable energy solutions.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower South African social movements, in collaboration with service NGOs, to drive a just transition through community-owned renewable energy solutions. By engaging local governments and stakeholders, we aim to create policies and mechanisms that enable widespread adoption of clean energy. Through strategic planning, research, workshops, and hands-on installations, we’re building a sustainable future. Our project not only impacts communities directly but also aims to inspire through documentation of our journey, fostering a broader shift towards equitable renewable energy solutions.

Our Partners

Urban Movement Indicator is proud to work with the following partners:

GroundWork

Groundwork is a non-profit environmental justice service and developmental organization working primarily in Southern Africa in the areas of Climate & Energy Justice, Coal, Environmental Health, Global Green and Healthy Hospitals, and Waste.

Vukani Environmental Movement

The Vukani Environmental Movement is a registered non-profit organisation that was established in 2016. The organisation focuses its work on addressing environmental issues within the Mpumalanga Highveld of South Africa. Abahlali baseMjondolo

Abahlali baseMjondolo – in English, “the residents of the shacks”  – is a socialist shack dwellers’ movement in South Africa which primarily campaigns for land, housing and dignity, to democratise society from below and against xenophobia. The movement grew out of a road blockade organised from the Kennedy Road shack settlement in the city of Durban in early 2005 and has since expanded to other parts of South Africa. As of October 2022 it claims to have more than 115,000 members in good standing in 81 branches in four of the country’s provinces.

It makes no profit and exists solely for the benefit of the people it represents. It is a vocal and vigilant group active in lobbying, reporting and researching industrial incidents and accidents in this area.

Sustainable Energy Africa

Sustainable Energy Africa promotes equitable, low carbon, clean energy development in urban South Africa and Africa. Through our work we promote energy efficiency, the transition to more sustainable energies such as solar and wind power and access to safe and affordable energy services for all. We do this through research, capacity building, policy engagement and information dissemination.
